Alfred and friends are helping Mr. Russard set everything up for the class camping trip. He goes on to start the campfire and they prepare to tell ghost stories; which Milo tries to get out of hearing until they remind him that they still have to roast marshmallows. Eventually it's Camille's turn, and she begins her story about a headless monster who woke up campers by making very loud, scary noises. Her story is so convincing that it scares everyone into hiding, and Mr. Russard decides now would be a good time for bed, because they have to wake up early.

Milo is anxious after hearing the scary stories and he asks to share tents with someone else. Camille teases him until Cynthia cries out in alarm. The trio approach to find several beetles now covering the tents. She demands that they go home as Alffred begins to observe them, remarking on the fact that they are headless. This worsens things for everyone as he picks one up for testing, and Mr. Russard tries to calm everyone and get them to go to bed.

Alfred tells Camille good night and makes his way back to his tent- only to find everyone else in there too. Cynthia explains that the "ghost beetles" scared them, so they don't want to use their tents. Alfred decides to get Mr. Russard for help, only to realize he's joined his students. Milo and Camille return, further scaring everyone as Alfred brings up that besides the beetles being headless, but their insides are gone too. He is forced to silence everyone when they start panicking, believing he heard a sound just then. Mr. Russard asks Alfred to hurry and figure out what's going on, because at this rate he will have no choice but to take everyone home earlier than intended.

The trio get to work with their investigation when Winston Moose appears. He is in a foul mood over being kept up all night when Milo suddenly falls into the nearby bush, releasing many tiny bugs. Alfred starts wondering if they could have eaten the beetles and Camille recognizes them as cicadas, which Alfred determines to be their third clue.

They return to their campsite for a clue review, and with some quick thought, Alfred summons everyone else in order to explain his findings around the campfire. Everyone is really tired by now, so he makes it quick by having Camille explain that the "beetles" are actually cicadas. What they have been seeing are their shells, which they shed upon resurfacing from underground. They just happened to land on their tents and shed their old shells.

By now everyone feels much better, and they're ready to go to bed. Until they realize the sun is now rising, in which case there's little point in going to bed. But as they wait to watch it, everyone slowly begins to drift off to sleep. Winston slowly walks along to find this and he sees their camera. Before leaving he takes a picture for them.
